What is Lay-up? Lay-up refers to the process of placing composite fabric layers, or ‘plies’, onto a tool to form a laminate stack. Hand lay-up is typically used to fabricate low-volume or prototypes structures in industries such as aerospace, renewable energy, and automotive. Why FibreFORM? Automation is essential to meet the increasing demand for lighter, more efficient and greener, aircraft and wind turbine blades. |
How does FibreFORM work?
FibreFORM is able to carefully pick-up composite plies using individually controlled suction cups (the model shown has 270!). Then, with its specially designed hand and wrist mechanisms, it manipulates the splines in such a way as to match the 3D surface of a tool – all with millimetric accuracy and precision. |

The modular design means it can be scaled and optimised for a given deposition activity. Multiple modules can be arranged in parallel, enabling the construction of impressive systems up to 20m long. It’s ideal for laying up aerostructures including fuselage sections, wing skins, engine nacelles, or wind turbine blades. |
